I was commissioned by Collin for a surprise beach birthday shoot for his wife Roxanne. Originally we had planned to do the shoot in Fort Lauderdale but eventually ended up in Satellite Beach, Central Florida.
What did it take to get this portrait you ask?
Well, all of us were actually in the water, I was actually on my stomach and elbows with my camera literally inches above the water. I had to time waves at just the right second so it would come crashing over Roxanne and Collin to provide a wrap-around effect on them. This was all while holding the camera still at 1/50 of second to bring in the ambient light.
Sometimes you have to take risks to get the shots you need. It could have been a costly mistake but if I had taken this shot overhead, it definitely wouldn’t have this perspective and I wouldn’t have picked up their reflection in the sand.
When we were done, along with Roxanne and Collin, I was soaked too.
The entire time we were fighting a strong ocean breeze, so we could only light from left. A few times when we did try to light from the right the umbrella acted like a sail and started to tear apart, you can see what the umbrella looked like when we were done with it. You know what, even though the umbrella got soaked, bent out of shape and ripped up; it was worth it to get this portrait!
Thank you Mary-Ann for braving the winds and water to be my lighting assistant.
