Over the past couple of weeks, this photo has gotten a lot of interest in not only it’s creativity but also how it was pulled off.
Here’s how:
Things you will need:
- A flash that you fire remotely.
- A way to fire the flash remotely, Commander mode on the camera body or other wireless trigger method.
- A photographic umbrella that can be shot in bounce orientation.
- Willing subjects.
- A holder to attach the flash to the umbrella.
Attach your flash to the holder and then to the umbrella. After the flash is attached, position the flash near to the of the umbrella, as if you were choking it. The flash head should be positioned up towards the umbrella, you want to bounce the flash. Turn on the flash and ensure that it is ready to be fired remotely, in my case, I was using the Commander mode to fire the flash. In this case, I used the flash in Manual mode to get the desired effect.
Now hand the umbrella and flash to your willing subjects and have them hold the umbrella as if it was raining, slightly tilted towards you to hide the flash. Pop up your flash if you are using Commander mode, otherwise use your triggering method, and it should trigger the flash. It is up to you to decide how much flash power you are going to use.
Camera settings:
- Manual mode
- Aperture F5
- Shutter Speed: 1/15 to bring in some of the ambient light.
- ISO 320
- Focal length: 27mm
- Flash power: 1/4 power in flash Manual mode.
